Consider this my tribute to A:tLA.
I could write a million paragraphs about what this show means to me, but I’ll just say this: Katara and Sokka helped me stop hating my skin color.
PoC representation is important, guys.
Never, ever dismiss race as “just skin color”. Never dismiss anyone who talks about race on tumblr as some mindless rabid SJ warrior, either. Those “SJ warriors” you make fun of aren’t oversensitive nuisances, they’re real people with real experiences and valid emotions.
Race is important. Race is more than skin color. Race is culture, race is ethnic background, race is your mother tongue, race is people who look and talk like you. Race is family.
I’ll try to shut up now, but dear fellow fanartists, I must beg you to not whitewash characters. Please. Don’t whitewash.
In a world that stereotypes people of color all the damn time, positive portrayals are crucial. And when you whitewash, accidentally or not, you’re denying people of color like me the chance to be real people with real personalities and experiences in the media. I’m tired of being your stereotypical Indian call center employee/job thief/oppressed brown girl that needs a white saviour.
That’s basically why I love A:tLA as much as I do.
